The butterfly is one of the figures most often made by the craftswomen of Rari, a village located 22 km. from Linares in the Maule Region of central-southern Chile. This particular piece of dyed horsehair and vegetable fiber was made using a stitch known as “fileteado” and has a safety pin on the back so it can be worn as a brooch.
It is the product of a longstanding tradition under which the village’s women contribute to local identity by creating figures inspired by their surroundings, daily life and worldview.
It was donated to the Museum in 1999.
