100TH ANNIVERSARY OF MNBA: FROM THE PAST TO PRESENT. MIGRATIONS.

Echoing a transversal phenomenon in the history of humanity, that from the 20th Century onwards has become increasingly complex and dramatic, this exhibition called for artists around the world to address and work around the problem of migration, amplifying this look not only to processes related with crossing geographical boundaries, but also the transfer of social and cultural boundaries from the new technological tools and forms of communication that have been developed in the context of globalization.

The proposal of each of the 33 artists participating in this occasion are diverse, both in regards to technique, as well as their view of immigration processes and the challenges of human movement in the 21st Century.

SELECTION OF WORKS ACQUIRED BY THE MNBA DURING THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF 1910

For the inauguration of the museum in 1910, a major International Exhibition was organized and included countries from The Americas, Europe and the Far East. Works of Art, from the time, were submitted by governments through embassies, curators and sometimes even independent artists. After the exhibition, which brought together more than 1,600 works of art including sculptures, drawings, architectural designs and applied arts, the commission of Fine Arts selected about 90 works, which were acquired by the Chilean Government for the Museum´s Collection.

The artists that participated one hundred years ago, even though they are not representative of the 20th Century Avant Garde, formed a large part in the history of art of the 19th Century. A number of the participants were the members of the official circuit and representatives from the Academies that had previously hosted Chilean artists. Many of which were members of jury panels, commissions and art councils. ¨French Art was the hallmark of the founding collection of the Museum. The influence of academic renowned artists, such as an instructor at the Academy of Bellas Artes in Paris, Jules Lefebvre", explains the MNBA curator, Ramon Castillo, in the sample catalog being edited for printing.

A selection of the works acquired in 1910, will be displayed in the North Wing on the second floor of the Museum. They include, Mystical Dream by Eliseo d´Angelo Visconti (Italy 1866-Brazil 1944), The Anguish of Mary Magdalene by Jules Joseph Lefebvre (France 1834-1912), Magicienne by Alfred Pierre Agache (France 1843-1915), The Knight of Calatrava by José Malhoa (Portugal 1855-1933) and Group of Lansquenets by Eugène Burnand (Switzerland 1850-1921)
