Silver Mate Cup

Silver Mate Cup
Silver Mate Cup

A domestic artefact used to steep mate. During South America’s colonial period, the use of cups made of noble materials for this infusion, adopted from the region’s indigenous peoples, was considered a mark of status. The high cost of silver pieces restricted their use to aristocratic families or the well-off while the rest of the population used hollowed-out gourds or ceramic cups.

Material or technique: Smelted silver

Collection: Silver
