La lectura de relatos de viajeros, provocó gran expectación entre las élites latinoamericanas del siglo XIX. La presencia y la mirada de los expedicionarios extranjeros, no sólo contribuyó al desarrollo de la investigación científica, sino que también incentivó la exaltación del nacionalismo en las esferas dirigentes de las jóvenes naciones.

Samuel Haigh, Mary Graham y Gilbert Farguhar Mathison, son relevantes para el conocimiento de Chile del siglo XIX.
